The Kjeldalselva power plant is up and running

The Kjeldalselva power plant is beautifully situated by the fjord in Storfjord municipality in Troms. The power plant has the Lyng Alps as a catchment area with high peaks up to 1,800 meters altitude. The power plant uses a drop of 233 meters from the intake up in Kjeldalselva down to the power station. This gives an annual calculated average production of 12.7 GWh from a Pelton turbine with an output of 5.1 MW. The waterway consists of 826 meters of water-filled tunnel and 446 meters of pressure pipes.

It has been a long process from the time the license was granted until the power plant is now finally completed. The power plant received a license from NVE in 2009, with construction starting in the autumn of 2018. The intake is located in steep and rugged terrain in Kjeldalen. There is no easy way to reach the intake, so the equipment has been flown up and personnel has had to walk or use skis and snowshoes for an hour leisurely walk from the power station.

The power plant is now complete, with little visible intervention in the landscape. But you can see the power plant from Europavei 6 when you drive past Hatteng, the municipal center in Storfjord, in the heart of Lyngenfjorden.
