Ullestad power plant has an intake in Ullestadåna, and the water is led in a 1400 meter long pipeline down to the power station. Tverråna power plant is located in the same building.
The authorities (the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate) have emphasized that the most important issues are the consideration of the landscape, local interests, and biological diversity. To meet this, the technical interventions are adapted to the landscape so that the consequences are minimal. It is ensured that there is enough moisture left in the watercourse through the regulation of the minimum water flow. This will also benefit the user interests and the fish in the watercourse. To reduce the effect on the salmon-carrying section, the requirements for the installation of a bypass valve are followed.

If the inflow is less than the minimum water flow requirement, the entire inflow shall be allowed to pass. In such cases, the power plant shall not be in operation. The power plant shall at all times be operated according to the inflow, all changes shall be gradual, and typical start/stop operation shall not occur.
A bypass valve with a capacity of at least 50% of the maximum discharge capacity shall be installed in the power plant.
